Black drawing salve is a traditional old time country salve. I have formulated this recipe based on historical documents combined with Pennsylvania Dutch herbs and instructions. This salve is used to soothe minor skin irritations, ease the discomfort of insect stings, poison ivy and to help draw splinters for easier removal etc. This is not for the treatment of any ailments, it is simply provides a soothing application by providing herbal oils to moisturize.

The main ingredients are locally harvested Amish bees wax, and an olive and jojoba oil infusion of traditional herbs along with pine tar, activated charcoal, lanolin, Vit E. and kaolin clay.

I use my own garden and wild harvested herbs of comfrey root, plantain, lavender, rosemary, chickweed, common burdock and chamomile that are air dried. The dried herbs are macerated in the olive oil along with activated charcoal that acts as an abrasive to aid in the release of the plant oils. After five days, the infusion is strained three times through cotton cheese cloth.

The final preparation consists of blending pine tar, kaolin clay, a small amount of lanolin and Vit E into the gently warmed herbal infusion. The addition of melted pure bees wax creates the soft ointment consistency that is poured into recyclable tins ready for use.

Black Drawing Salve is a strongly scented product with the pine tar being the predominant aroma. It is all natural. This balm is not intended to treat skin problems or to replace medical advice. It is not for extended use, if irritation develops, discontinue use.

Price is for one tin filled with 2 oz of soapsmiths black drawing salve.

  • A great way to spend a Saturday is to drive through the thriving Amish communities in Sinking Valley and the Cove area of our county.

Miles of well tended picturesque farms offer a wide variety of products. Brown eggs, fresh goat milk and honey for my soap, fresh vegetable stands and greenhouses with herbs are readily available.

There are several Amish bulk food grocers. They offer great products at fantastic prices. You park you car right next to the horse drawn buggies.

This is my inspiration for Black Salve.
